3-legged, 1-pound kitten has 8 lives left after surviving emergency surgery

BRIGHTON, Colo. – A kitten found when she weighed less than a pound and had a terrible infection has only eight lives left after surviving emergency surgery.

Maxine Mager, the president of Creative Acres animal rescue, said she heard a tiny meow in her chicken area last week and found a very small kitten.

The kitten had a lump on her thigh, but Maxine wasn’t worried.

“I’ve seen that before,” Mager said.

Mager gave the kitten antibotics and put a heat pack on her leg, but the bump got bigger.

A friend who is a veterinarian checked the kitten and didn’t think it would survive.

Mager decided to try a second vet.

“He looked at kitty and took it upon himself to do X-rays,” Mager said.

It turned out the kitten had three breaks in her knee that was complicated by an infection.

That vet didn’t do emergency surgeries, and had never operated on an animal that small, so Mager said she went to a third vet.

The third vet took the kitten in, did surgery and called Mager with the good news that the kitten had survived, but she lost her leg.

That didn’t concern Mager. She named the kitten “Bumpie” since she now has a bump for a leg.

“We’ve had a couple 3-legged animals [at Creative Acres],” Mager said.

Mager said she’s cared for 3-legged cats, even a 3-legged sheep and a 3-legged dog, at one point.

“Animals do real well,” Mager said. “We have blind animals, deaf animals.”

Bumpie is back home and learning how to run around on her three legs.

While the first two veterinarians didn’t charge Mager, the third did, so she is taking donations to help pay for Bumpie’s surgery.
